Economic crisis: have we learned the right lessons?

Paperjam.lu

In collaboration with the Oxford Union Society, considered to be the “world’s most prestigious debating society”, we decided to launch a series of stimulating debates. The first debate will be moderated by the president of the Oxford Union Society, who will help us launch this exciting new event in the best manner possible.

Event sponsored by Mr. Etienne Schneider, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Economy.

Two opposing parties, composed each of two speakers, will present their arguments around the motion “Economic crisis: have we learned the right lessons?” in the hope of winning over the audience’s acclaim.

At the end of the debate, the public will be asked to vote for or against the motion.

For: Yves Nosbusch (BGL BNP Paribas, Chief economist) and Dr. Jean-Pierre Zigrand (London School of Economics Associate professor of finance and Systemic Risk Centre Director).

AgainstFranz Fayot (Député LSAP, Président de la commission de l’économie) and Nicolas Henckes (UEL, Secrétaire général).

Important

Founded in 1823 in the city of Oxford, England, the Oxford Union aims to promote debate and discussion not just in Oxford University, but also across the globe. Throughout its rich history, the Oxford Union has been at the cutting edge of controversial debate. In 1964, Malcolm X came to the Union and demanded black empowerment “by any means necessary” in a debate on the motion that “extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice, moderation in pursuit of justice is no virtue”. In 1978, US President Richard Nixon gave its first public speech after the Watergate scandal. With an unparalleled reputation, it has attracted famous speakers from all walks of life, such as Winston Churchill, Yasser Arafat, Ronald Reagan, Robert Kennedy, Michael Jackson, Shakira, Dalai Lama, Mother Teresa, Albert Einstein, Stephen Hawking, Imran Khan, Jane Goodall, Simon Singh and so many more. In the words of Lord Michael Heseltine, the British businessman and conservative politician, the Union has “managed to absorb the greatest diversity, the wildest firebrands, the most outspoken and non- conformist people.”
